The objective of Yarr! is to amass the biggest quantity of booty, represented by golden dubloons.
You earn dubloons by finding treasures that are hidden on the islands. Which island the treasure is hidden on, is your job to find out.
Some of the islands you visit will have old pirates living on them, who, if you can answer their questions correctly, will help you find your way to the treasure. They will give you clues to things you can find, or not find, on the treasure island.
You do however not have as long as you like. Every visit to a new island takes one day, and you only have food for a set amount of days, so be careful or you may have to return to land empty handed. Food for a day costs 100 dubloons, so if you don't find enough treasure you may just run out.
